The IRS is warning taxpayers about scams that involve websites that mimic the IRS e-Services online registration page. Apparently, taxpayers are being contacted and told to register on the IRS e-Services online registration page. The address of the official IRS website is www.irs.gov. Don’t be mislead by sites claiming to be the official IRS website and ending in .com, .net, .org, or any designation other than .gov. Identity theft is a growing problem with scammers asking for confidential information posing as the IRS. Identify thieves contact taxpayers using the mail, telephone, fax or email to set up their victims. When identify theft takes place over the Internet (email), it is called phishing. The IRS does NOT initiate taxpayer communications through email, text messaging, or social media channels. Unsolicited email claiming to be from the IRS should be reported to the IRS at phishing@irs.gov. You may also report IRS-related phishing attempts and fraud to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1-800-366-4484.
